Correspondence consists of letters from friends and business associates, many of Irish descent, living in Louisiana, New York, and Ireland. Letters (1836-1850) discuss personal matters; economic conditions among the lower classes of Ireland; the Irish Independence movement; prices during the Panic of 1837; and a fire at Louisiana College in Jackson. Letters (1851-1869) discuss a concert by Jenny Lind; killings in East Feliciana Parish; the death of John McKowen's wife; the Hungarian exile Louis Kossuth; and the Democratic campaign of Franklin Pierce. Included are letters and circulars from New Orleans cotton factors (1850-1852, 1869). The collection contains a newspaper article written by Dr. John C. MacKowen who refutes the claim by Colonel Allen D. Chandler (Secretary of State, Georgia) that Candler captured General Neal Dow at Port Hudson, June 3, 1863.
